Pied Beauty

Right, here I am, back, I'm a bit slow posting, blame the hideous weather.

"rough winds do shake the darling buds of May"

That sonnet is the most accurate comment on British weather, we've been moaning about it for hundreds of years

My post is inspired by the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins
Pied Beauty

 Glory be to God for dappled things —
  For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
    For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
  Landscape plotted and pieced — fold, fallow, and plough;
    And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
  Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
    With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
                Praise him.

I'm lucky enough to live next to a large stretch of woodland, it's been looking almost offensively green these last few days. It haven't touched up these photos at all, it really is that bright.

 This week I've bought a few things in the chazzas...
Linen smock £5, 60s mauve gloves £1, atomiser £1.50, Magnifying glass a present for Mike £1, hankie and "mood ring" cat brooch 25p each

On Thursday I bought a ring in an antiques shop. It's hallmarked silver, but not very old. Very pretty but the clear stone was very scuffed. So, I decided to change it. Inspired by Krista's painted rhinestones and a Blackbird's egg I found

I'm so pleased with it. And what did I use? Emulsion, Acrylic paint and clear nail varnish!
I also bought... 60s/80s ties for Mike £1 each, Wicker Man-esque sun charm - I've named him Sulis, now I'm off to do a sacrifice to make sure the Sun stays in the sky and makes the earth bountiful and that  - £2.50, car print top £3.99, silk tie dye scarf, 50p and 80s belt £1 all from Charity shops.
Japanese pattern book 99p, 60s Spanish singles 45p each, Cameo ring £2.50

Now, talking of records, I've got some exciting news... I'm now working two days a month in my local record shop. Somewhere I (and other music nerds in Wycombe) have wanted to work in forever. I'll get some photos up soon!

Just before I go, here's a look at an artistic work in progress...

A post inspired by a poem - I need to be more poetic. It's Beautiful. Intresting about the local record store. What kind of record store?

Yay, I always get excited when I see your posts come up in my reader! This is no exception. You know I'm a sucker for literary inspiration. That woodland does look beautiful. I wish we got a proper Springtime in this country. I adore the car print top and the cameo ring, and the little kitty brooch. That scarf is just so cute too. Great news about your new job. Working in a record shop is something I've wanted to do since I was 13, especially after I saw Empire Records! It's where all the cool people worked! xxxx

Yay!!! Congratulations, you're living the dream of our youth :) Best of luck, how exciting!! Lovely photos, I miss Naphill woods - let's go for a walk there soon. Xxx

So many great finds and a poem, too! Always a treat when my dear Clare posts! How cool to work in a record shop - are your colleagues as cute as John Cussack and Jack Black?
That sun glass thingy brought baxck memories - there used to be a hippy shop in Walsall called "the Dragon's Hoard" and everyone I knew always bought my presents from there in the 1990s - my house was crammed full of stars, suns, moons and ethnic looking wooden cats.
Loving everything especially the car print top, the Japanese pattern sourcebook, the Spanish singles and the colour of those gloves!
Your box (sounds rude!) looks fabulous and the ring is a masterpiece!
Now go and do a sacrifice, I'm off to get pissed in front of the Apprentice! xxxxxxxxxxxx

Ooh lovely, your posts are so unique. I didn't know that The Darling Buds of May was from a poem. How marvellous.

I love that ring you have painted, it is so beautiful and what a great idea. You are v clever.

Your woodland looks lovely. Woodland is one of my favourite habitats. Is that where you take Ruby to look for squirrels? Everything is looking gloriously green and lush, which is lovely, but now, for balance, I think a bit of sunshine.

Your artistic work in progress is delightful, there's something slightly Natalie Lete in feel about it, which is a wonderful thing in my book. xxxxx

Nice upscaling job on the ring - it looks like it was always like that! The Japanese Pattern book looks cool and the Spanish singles are an awesome addition to any vinyl collection. Speaking of, congrats on the record store job! I worked in record stores for a number of years after finishing my university degree and aside from the low pay and annoying customers, it was fun ;)

Ooh, there you are being all poetical like, and then people go talking about your box and your ring...

A post full of gorgeousness, darling - all things counter, original, spare, strange. Which is why we love them, of course. Beautiful woodland, the light though the trees is stunning, isn't it? And all the pretty things. Nice job on the ring and the box (oh stop,with the Carry On tittering) and I love those gloves and the Japanese pattern book.

A job in a record shop? Between that and Hughenden, you are cornering the market in South Bucks for retro employment, excellent work if you can get it. I hope you will be suitably sniffy and sarcastic with your customers.

Outfits next time please, I miss seeing your loveliness! xxxx

Nice ties. It struck me last Saturday when I was out with my BFF: Why do men buy new ties? All 3 thrift shops we went to had plies of awesome ties. I found one for Ray, from Brooks Bros, $2, it still had the $45 store tag one it. You could use the atomizer as a mister

Your ring looks like an egg and I love that sense. Excellent upcycle. I'm wondering what your forest rite for sun will entail. What will be the sacrifice? I hope you document it...
And huge congratulations on your job. You are officially cool, not that you weren't before. You can be all knowledgeable-like and droopy-eyed behind mod sunglasses.
I love the insects on your box.

Lush post..a poem is always a treat. We learned that one in school. Lovely upcycling and I like the sneaky peek of what you've been painting. I have that same pattern book, Spooky Twin, it's brill.
Hurrah for a new job especially when it's somewhere you've always wanted to be. A record shop...fecking excellent.

Perfume in an atomiser always seems impossibly glamorous. I love the car print top and the cameo ring. I can't wait to see your finished artistic work. It looks great so far.

Yay working in a record shop sweet...well done...what fun.
The photographs of the forest area are just so lovely and peaceful.
I think what you have done with the ring is amazing....it looks like a old turquoise ring now.
The Japanese pattern book was a terrific find.

Beautiful greenery for sure! I do think you live in a very picturesque place that's why I laughed so hard at the working girl lane! I love what you did to the ring I have been wanting to do a necklace too but they aren't cheap. Your new few days at the record shop sound like such a nice treat, can't wait to have a peek. I am really digging your insect box in progress, what's in the box?!?!?!

I love all your chazza buys, but especially a magnifying glass. I have a weird obsession for those, maybe it comes of having poor vision, lol. Xx

Oh, you're back! When I tried to read your blog earlier in the week I kept getting a message saying the blog was no longer. I was so upset! I've only just found you, and have been reading the archive posts. When I thought I wasn't going to be able to read your blog again I wasn't happy. Glad it must've been just a blogger system glitch. Anyway, wanted to say I love your blog, and how creative and fearless you are with your personal style. I wish I had a tiny percentage of your style (and charity shopping skills!). ~ LittleMissPlump (Sara)

Sacramento sums it up pretty well Clare, beautiful photos and poetry, the bird's egg ring is lovely, and the box covered in flowers and insects is gorgeous, you have so much talent and imagination. Congratulations on getting the record shop job, not an easy task these days, seeing as there aren't many record shops left. I think working in a record shop is officially one of the coolest jobs ever. xx
