The Ladies Mile

I don't know about you but I like to dress up in tribute to local legends.

Apparently, the path running past the end of my garden was the haunt of ladies of loose morals, who tempted the cattle drovers on their return from London. It was nicknamed The Ladies Mile. It may also just be a rumour of course, but I hope not. The hills were always more wild and lawless, Naphill had a reputation for being full of robbers and cutpurses in the time of Queen Elizabeth I!

Headband - made it myself
Shawl/Rug - Charity shop
Strawberry top - Jumble sale
Corset - Ebay
Gloves - River Island
Skirts and bloomers - Ebay
Boots - Ebay

No I haven't got terrible dandruff, it's still snowing here

I've been naughty and bought quite a few things recently. The re-discovery of Aylesbury flea market yesterday had me spending a liiiiittle too much, but I got some great stuff
This brooch/necklace was £2, it's Edwardian. I added the pink cord

Here's some some stuff I've bought recently
Excellent shorts from M&S, Tranny Clown postcard, more on him later and Queen's Coronation Gala Dinner Event Menu from the flea market, Gypsy top from ebay

Everything from Aylesbury flea market, the 1907 postcard was the most expensive thing at £2.50!
Saucy photo etc from "The London Opinion" August 1946, also from the flea market

I also received a parcel of wonder from the deliciously dark Lucy Nation
I love it all, I wore the checked dress sledging on Saturday. I'm very very bad at sledging

oh and I bought this handbag for £3

and finally.... I found a wonderful C Edwards ballerina print and then this gorgeous book full of beautiful ballerina images.

Have a wonderful week.

Here's some more folklore from my village:
If a child  looses it's tooth and it isn't burnt and a dog sees it, the child will have the dogs tooth come

So... burn your children's teeth!

Byeeee!

Don't take this the wrong way but you really cut it as a lady of loose morals! The corset, the petticoats, the shawl, the strawberry top, it's all just too perfect. And, you know how much I love those boots. You look like you should be roaming the countryside with your own dandy highwayman, Bonnie & Clyde style. I think the frilly knickers are my favourites of your other finds. Love me some crazy ass English folklore xxx

I am quite sure you would have tempted your fair share of cattle drovers!! And your red hair would have outdone Elizabeths.....hmmmm,
that could have gotten you into trouble??

Hello Miss Simmonds. I'm so happy to have discovered you. Honestly you are so gorgeous in those photos. You'd clearly make a very good living as a professional trollope. I love the ballerina book! A folk legend from my Gyno no less: If you are pregnant and you go to the zoo, do NOT look at the monkeys or you will have an UGLY child!

That's a helluva haul. Love the tranny clown and the brooch is lush.

My word look at you saucy minx!
I used to live on 'Beggars Bush Hill' called such as it was where all the beggars from the London Road used to gather before and after starting their 'working' day. I think your look is much nicer than mine would be lol.

You look bloody fabulous, Clare! Seriously, I think this may be my favourite ever outfit of yours (and there have been some crackers!) I LOVE the corset (and I want one) and the whole look, with the boots and petticoat and gloves, etc, is just sexacious! You would definitely have been a very successful temptress, delighting the cattle drovers in their... Well, droves! There would have been much stirring under their hessian smocks, I'm sure! Perhaps you could encourage Mike to dress up too, and you can play tart and drover on the Ladies Mile, sounds like fun!

Who knew Aylesbury had such a fab flea market? Love all your treasures, the Cupid and heart pendants are delightful, so are the postcards and hip flask and bag and ballerinas.
AND a parcel from lovely Lucy? Such great gifts, you are a lucky girl.
Keep warm, love, keep your bloomers on in the snow! xxxxx

This is a great post! Visually stunning (because of you) and offers some history and a display of tantalizing goodies from your local flea market.

That is a great look on you by the way. I swear you're a reincarnate of one of those ladies who use to use that lane for some savory play. Do you feel unexplainably saucy when you walk down there? LOL

A LADY of loose morals?! Indeed, you look like a lady who's up for a bit of action, for sure! All in the best POSSIBLE taste! Hot little outfit, missy!
And woweee, have you been scoring up large! Between parcels of joy and you're own bargain beacon, you've done bloody well! I would have loved to see you sledging. no matter if you're bad at it, in that funky little plaid number you looked perfect, obviously!

The photoshoot in the snow is so evocative!!I'd love to dress with Victorian inspired clothes everyday! You created a perfect outfit balancing the right amount of antique and innovative details that turns it not into a decayed costume, but into something extremely wearable (obviously for our standards).I love the gloves, the kawaii strawberries blouse, the headband and the shawl!
There is still so much to comment, your finds are breathtaking!
The en travesti clowns, the young queen iconic menu, the 40's magazines and the ballerina's themed prints and books are fabulous! The lovely Lucy's presents are amazing too, I can't wait to see you wearing all those beautiful things!

Look at you, all luscious and siren-like. Those men would have stood no chance!!!!
Great outfit and I like your backdrop too.
I adore all the ballerina stuff. There's Margot Fonteyn top right, she was my childhood heroine and I did my thesis on the Ballets Russes (and its influence on fashion). xxxx

Always so much to comment on your posts. Love the outfit - one of my favourites ever I reckon. I like the idea of dressing up as local legends although I live on the borders of London/Essex - prime TOWIE land I'm afraid. Can you imagine! Your buys are great. I've found Jim's collection of postcards festering in the loft and I'm going to display them in some meaningful way - not sure how yet but that's the aim. xx

You make a wonderful Lady of Negotiable Affections! Great outfit and fab finds, I'm intrigued by the animal cards - do you think they might have been part of a game? The brooch is sweet too, I've done the same thing with them in the past x

You look amazing as per. Typical that prostitutes hung around outside your back garden, you always get the interesting historical stuff :)

I love that folklore at the end, it's hilarious. Can I come to the Aylesbury flea market with you soon?

Beautiful corset, bling and purse, Clare! And how cool is that local lore - does every one know it or did you read about it somewhere? I love that you have interpreted legend in this way - you look wonderful and I want to call you a brazen hussy (lovingly meant, of course)! xo

OMG you just reminded me that the tooth fairy didn't come two nights ago and visit The Stylist! Bad tooth fairy. My bosom is heaving with breathless pleasure at the sight of your new corsety and all its babelicious gorgeousness!!! The hair, the flowers, the bloomers and rug - dammit, I've got the horn large style and probs should go and hang around the Ladies' Mile and see what crops up!! Ballerinas are always, always flippin' gorgeous aren't they? I love the tranny postcard, the floral cutie shorts and Queenie's dinner menu - Queenie looks like she should be joining the lads above her and at 25, she probs would have run away with them and caused a right royal disgrace! Lucy Nation is utterly adorable and I LOVE the delicate white collar she sent you. See you on the Mile !!!! xoxoxoxox

Love that you dress as local legends Clare and you look very fine while you're at it too. Your finds at the market are lovely, especially that brooch and the tranny clown postcard. I've rediscovered a local charity shop lately and have went into a bit of a buying frenzy too, so I can sympathise with your overspending, I blame January, it's such a dreary month we need pretty goodies to get through it. xx

I loved your joke(*^_^*) Take Care of Yourself not to catch a cold♪♪♪

I'd toss you a guinea young wench! Very sexy. Better than the hooker gear which is favoured in South London any day.

Aylesbury flea sounds amazing, I love all the stuff you got, especially Mrs Croak with her poor out-of-water tadpole babies! And I am in love with your handbag too. I hope some of your rummaging skills can be transferred to me!

The tooth thing is just too weird, love that kind of thing.

This outfit is gorgeous!! Your hair looks amazing and the corset is just perfect. :) The only cool stories we have where I live are a couple of ghost stories, but nothing quite as cool as the "haunt of ladies of loose morals."
