A Staunch Character

I found Grey Gardens by chance one Christmas, a strange documentary about two eccentric women living in a ramshackle mansion in The Hamptons.

I loved Big Edie and Little Edie instantly. Though perhaps I could see something in myself in both that wasn't very positive, but strong and passionate

Despite living in terrible conditions the two Edies preferred to cling onto their past than sell it for money.

Thanks to Vix for this last one!

Little Edie has some fashion advice for you all. The whole documentary is free to watch on youtube

"Mother wanted me to come out in a Kimono, so we had quite a fight"

You've just moved into a whole 'nother level of fabulous here, Clare. This is a stellar post that reflects your artist and your movie star qualities - both. The Edies are truly inspirational, although their house needed cleaning! I watched both docudramas and was glad that Little Edie finally got to perform in NYC.

Hi Clare, I've been reading your blog but haven't commented yet. Thank you so much for your creative renditions of the Grey Gardens and reminding me that I've wanted to watch the film for years. I finally did so tonight and had few "that's me in a few years" moments. Love Little Edie's fashion advice and her collection of sweaters, scarves and god know what else she wore on her head.

Oh oh I just love Grey Gardens!!!!! Both the documentary and the movie are fabulous!!!! I just love watching them ever so often. It is fascinating to see what realities people can make when they leave society.
I was so excited when I saw the house in the first pic, you look amazing in the turban and coat.
Thanks for a great post.

I thought you used Photoshop, please iluminate me.
So brilliant and inspiring, and the story of the two eddies is beyond fabulous, dear Clare.

Wow, this is amazing. I am enthralled. I had to go straight to google and find out about it. Now I need to see it!
I love the way you have done it with the pictures of you superimposed! Great idea.
Just based on those two clips I feel very sorry for Little Edie and I hope things turned out OK for her...fingers crossed. xxx

I love how you've superimposed yourself onto those backdrops, your such a techie whizz. What a fab blue costume too, it looks all sparkly fab, and a little bit bonkers. Where do you find these astounding stories of eccentricity?

Btw - I love your comments on my last post, 'Midsomer murders horsey look' is definitely a term I will be using in the future.

Xx

Oh oh oh, I've heard of this but never got around to watching the documentary. I must add it to the rental queue posthaste. Sounds right up my street, aristocratic lunacy and decaying old mansions, swoon! But, like others here, I MUST know how you managed your technical wizardry? I didn't think you could superimpose yourself like that on Picmonkey. Please tell me now, I can't bear it!!!!! xxx

I wish I live close to the flea market. I go when I travel to Málaga to see my youngest daughter who lives there. It is a car boot sale by the coast, mainly British and Germans living here
The outfit of silver flowers I am wearing today I got there for 1 euro- (50 cent the skirt and 50 the top)but I thought I better don´t write it or i will be called Mis papelicos 1 euro, hehehhehehehehe.
Thanks to you I added the silver metal roses ( from another pic to the material background in Picmonkey)
Much love dear Clare.

Dearest Clare,
Oh, you are also good at using photo-editer. Loved all the pictures(*^_^*)
So sorry, but I wish to get the meaning of the last phrase in this post. Does it mean your mother wanted you to go outside wearing Kimono? You must have one of them and I am happy for it, dear young friend.

Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

I'm reading back in time; the ones I missed and such. I need my Clare fix! :D I LOVE this one. Man, I love Little Edie so much. This documentary is one of my very favorites. I always thought their home was so beautiful. Even when it was no longer esthetically pleasing to the neighbors, I find something so lovely about the structure, and the meaningful bits. Ya know? I find such beauty in dilapidated homes and buildings.

You look terrific..the pictures are AWESOME! :D That one piece was just made for you. GORGE! XO
