Patience is a necessary ingredient of genius*

*Benjamin Disraeli - more on him later...

Here's my new hair all pinked up. I'm not sure, I wish I could be more enthusiastic. I've a suspicion it looks a bit like a wig. What do you think?

ooh and I finally added this fur collar to my mint green 60s crimpeline Eastex coat. Much better!

Do you think the dark lipstick suits me too?

Oh dear, I'm ok but feeling a little flat, I haven't got any art done, but I have made over the office (ex 50s semi box room) and I did frame this little scrap. Though I accidentally glued the glass on the wrong side of the frame! I couldn't get it off again - here it is - lifesize

I've recently discovered a strange artist called Joseph Cornell, luckily Edie Pop and Ivy Black are both fans too.

Here's me posing me in my new tweed culottes, quite a difficult thing to style but I think I can do it - I love them!

What do you think?
Sorry for the lack of confidence. Not sure where it's come from.

Most recently the thing in my life I've been enjoying the most is my time at Hughenden Manor
It was the home of Victorian Prime Minister and our only PM with a direct Jewish background - Benjamin Disraeli. oh and his enigmatic wife Mary Anne.
Dizzy wasn't just a normal politician, he was a dandy, an acclaimed novel writer, ladies man, favourite of Queen Victorian and political reformer.

His wife Mary Anne was 12 years older and a wealthy widow. Disraeli pretty much married her for her money but unlike many Victorian melodramas the two had a very happy and loving marriage.

My 3 hours here a week are the best I spend, if only I got paid. I need to take the advice of the quote and be patient for art inspiration and possible paid work in something I care about.

Here's what I get to look at when looking after a room
The lovely lady is Countess Blessington - look her up, she had a crazy life

I won't bore you with too much information, I'll introduce more about the house in future posts

Back to clothes etc. I found this lovely boxy 90s M&S handbag for £3.99
I love the design, the fake crocodile material and those little spherical metal feet expensive bags have

mmm, 90s handbag

Though it might be early 00s

ARGH.

Here's something that's definitely 90s
and it's been stuck in my head for ages

I'm going to be back soon with a list of my top 10 celebrity crushes, should prove amusing - and I'm also passing it on to you lot to confess your crushes.

Looks bloody lush! Not like a wig and it's a gorgeous colour.
I do like that little piece, I like the fact it's small too and you have to have a good look to see what's going on. I'll have to send you some pics of my husband's work. No wonder you're enjoying your time there, what a fascinating place.
I'l have to think about celebrity crushes and get back to you..Tilda Swinton is one of them!xxxxx

Great lipstick, good on you for having the chutzpah to try it! I'd totally forgotten about Joseph Cornell - I discovered his work about 12 years ago at art college. There's a great book called Joseph Cornell Navigating The Imagination that I think you'd like x

Clare, I think you look stunning! You have the most gorgeous eyes! You always remind me why I always wanted brown eyes. Yeah. Love the color of your hair. I keep mine natural, but if I did go for pink, it would be just like that!! It does not look like a wig. Oh, and you will get inspired and do some painting!

A wig? You crazy pink haired loon, it looks nothing like a wig. Your hair is delightful, a nod to Frenchie in Grease, and it looks fabulous. You look especially Pink Ladyish with your leather jacket on!
Love the coat with extra furriness, love the culottes, and who doesn't accessorise with a boater, a vintage umbrella, and a dog?!
Now I am an ignoramus so I have never heard of Joseph Cornell, I will have to investigate...
Hughenden and Disraeli, I do know - I am so pleased you enjoy your time there (wouldn't it be fab to wangle some paid work there?) and I love seeing your photos of the manor.
Celebrity crushes? Don't think I have any, I'll have to make something up!
Hope your va-va-boom and rightful sense of confidence return to full beam soon.
PS. yes to the lippy! xxxxx

I LOVE the cotton candy pink hair on you, Miss Simmonds! The way you mixed it with the baby blue jacket is sheer (probably patient?) genius.

No your hair does not look like a wig, it looks fab. Also, yes you do suit dark lipstick. The darker the better when you have such amazing bright hair. I used to wear dark plum shades when my hair was blonde. Thank you so much for posting Violet. I absolutely love this song and the video is my favourite ever of Hole's. One of my old blog headers was a still of the intro of this video. I love the tweed pants. You pull them off to perfection and I love everything else. Old Dizzy looks quite the character doesn't he? Quite Byronesque! Hmmm! xxxxxx

I'm gonna echo everyone else and say, it doesn't look like a wig. It looks fabulous. I love the leopard print collar you added to the coat. I really like the dark lipstick with your pastel hair.

Even I like the hair and you know how I feel about pink!!!! It really suits you. I love your culottes but mostly I love the 'Oh my god I've just been papped!' expresion on your doggie's face.

Lurv HOLE!! Personally? I dig the pink hair, Clare. I think it's so funky and fuck you and pretty all at the same time. Besides--you're a freaking artist! How could you NOT have pink hair???

Yeah, I've been on a confidence downer lately. Mine strays more toward the "why bother?" kind of self-suckiness. Anyhoo, beautiful rooms you get to travel through, no???

Your hair is just amazing, it looks like candy floss and is sheer brilliance! It looks so cool with the leopard print scarf :)

I am now officially a pink hair convert. It looks amazing. If it looks like a wig it's one fantastic wig! Love love love it!!!!!

It's ironic that you're feeling so flat when you're looking so good Clare, your pink hair and dark lipstick really suit you. I agree with Lynn about your lovely dark eyes too, I think one reason I went with my hubby is so I'd have kids with his dark brown eyes. In the end only our daughter got them but I'm glad it was her rather than the boys because no one suits black flicky eyeliner as much as someone with dark eyes. You styled the culottes really well too.
I really like what I've seen of Joseph Cornell's work, he's one of those people I always want to find out about then I never do it.
Where you work is beautiful, even if you're not getting paid now, at least you're getting experience and showing genuine interest by volunteering, that could lead to something paid one day. xx

Kitty said... Best Blogger Tips[Reply to comment]Best Blogger Templates

Yeah, you don't really look convinced about the hair but I don't see why not, it's fabulous!! I'd be tempted to balance the dark lipstick with a little heavier eye makeup- I can see you're really pale (like me) so you'd not be able to go too heavy tho. Tweed culottes would be way beyond me to style and I think you've done it brilliantly!!!

Nikki @ Penelope Cat Vintage said... Best Blogger Tips[Reply to comment]Best Blogger Templates

I love your hair - not wiggish at all! The culottes are fab and so is the whole outfit.

I'd forgotten all about Cornell too, he was one of my inspirations for a college project. Never seen his work in real life though but I'd love to.
